GERMAN PEACE PLAN

PERSISTENT REPORT

REQUEST TO MUSSOLINI

SUBMISSION TO MR. [WELLES

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)

(Received March 18, 1.30 p.m.)

LONDON, March 17r

Europe is again alive with speculative reports of a German peace offensive. All foreign observers agree that the meeting between Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini is definitely linked up with the last conference by Mr. Summer Welles with Signor Mussolini. It is persistently reported that Herr Hitler is to ask Signor Mussolini to resubmit the German peace plan to Mr. Welles. Mr. Welles has already amended his itinerary to remain in Rome* a day longer, whereby it would be possible for him to see Signor Mussolini after his return from the Brenner Pass. '

The departure from Genoa of the steamer Conte di Savoia, on which Mr. Welles is to return to America, has been postponed indefinitely, presumably till Mr. Welles is ready to embark.

The German news agency says that the meeting between Herr Hitler and «, Signer Mussolini had long been envisaged, but in Home it is generally believed that the meeting was arranged only after Mr. Sumner Welles returned from London.
