YORKSHIRE SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the Yorkshire Society of New Zealand, which was held recently under the presidency of Mr. W. Appleton, congratulated Dr. C. E. Beeby, a Leeds man, upon his appointment as Director of Education. It was recalled that the Elementary Education Bill of 1870, which initiated a remarkable development in general education in England, was introduced by Mr. W. E. Forster, M.P., a member for one of the Yorkshire constituencies.

Mr. Appleton was re-elected president, and Mr. Karl Atkinson continues in the office of past-president. Vicepresidents elected were Mr. J. H. Flockton and G. Metcalf; hon. .secretary, Mr. J. Malton Murray; hon. treasurer, Mr. L. Monkman; management committee, Messrs. J. Hemingway, T. D. Hemingway, C. H. Phillips, W. E. Walker, H. Wood, and Captain F. E. Tether; social committee, Messrs. J. J. Hemingway, T. D. Hemingway, F. Ramson, and F. Lumb. . ;
