SHEEP AND GOLD

i Two recent numbers in the series "Making New Zealand" deal respectively with the squatters of the earlydays and ■ with the discovery of gold in various parts of the country. As in- previous numbers and in accordance with the whole scheme of the publication, information is given in a very tabloid form and concentration made on the pictorial element. Indeed, the number and variety of pictures is amazing, particularly interesting being those of ancient date. *As a. pictorial record of New Zealand's progress since 1840 "Making New Zealand* could hardly be bettered. The number dealing with the squatters of the early days gives interesting glimpses of .the days when huge areas were taken up. often without title or right, and explains the gradual development of t.n orderly land policy. The romance of the early gold days provides more than enough material for one number, but into one have been condensed the high lights of'tliis important phase of New Zealand's development.
