TO REMAIN FINNISH

NEW RAILWAY

DEFENDABLE FRONTIERS

HELSINKI, March 14. The Foreign Minister, M. Tanner, said that the railway across Finland from Kandalaksha to Sweden which, under the terms of the Moscow pact, is to be built this year by the joint signatories, will remain entirely Finnish. Replying to a question whether the new Finnish frontiers could be defended, M. Tanner said: "Our military experts advise that, any frontiers could be defended." M. Tanner revealed that the terms of the treaty contained no provision for the payment of compensation nor for the return of war booty to Russia. Field-Marshal Mannerheim said that only two battalions of volunteers and some artillery, anti-aircraft guns, and planes had been able to arrive in time to fight alongside the Finns. It was extremely hard to give up land which the Finns had possessed for centuries to a foreign race with an entirely different culture and morals, "but," he added, "we must do our best with what is left."
