NOT A STAYER

HIGH CASTE WELL BEATEN

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, March 7. High Caste had to play second part to Reading again in the St. Leger at Flemington on Tuesday. Reading led from the furlong upwards, and at no stage did High Caste look like winning; High Caste reduced Reading's four lengths' advantage to about a head at the two furlongs, but one cut from Munro's whip saw Reading ahead again. Under "pressure, High Caste reeled, and was not ridden out. He was very distressed, and apparently is not a stayer.

The race "was run in record time for the St. Leger, 2min 56§sec, only a quarter of a second outside the course record, which stands to the credit of the New Zealander First Acre.

P. Hiddle had some consolation on Tuesday for Broadcaster's defeat, winning the March Nursery with the Marconigram filly Session. Session had little to spare, and gave E. Bartle another winning ride. Mr. W. R. Kemball's four-year-old Beau Pere gelding Hilton was a hot favourite on St. Leger Day at Flemington in the Bourke Handicap, but he ran remarkably badly. The second string, Amiable, however, scored in the very fast time of lmin 23£ sec for seven furlongs.
