SOVIET ATTACKS
LENGTHENING OF FINNS' DEFENCE LINES
REPORTED FAILURE
(Received March 9, 1 p.m.)
LONDON, March 8.
A report from Stockholm states* that the Soviet attacks have been intensified across Wiborg Bay and on the coast of the gulf, doubling the length of the. Finnish southern defence lines. Therefore the military situation is regarded as most serious. If a landing on the coast between Wiborg and Helsinki succeeded the Russians would be well behind the defence lines outside Wiborg, but the Finns say that the landing attempts have failed.
A Finnish communique claims the repulse of the Russian . attacks in Wiborg Bay and in the middle of the Karelian Isthmuk, with the destruction of 400 Russians and a further 2000 north-east of Lake Ladoga. A Russian night communique claims the capture of Nautsi, and also four islands in the northern part of Lake Ladoga. Fifteen Finnish planes were shot down, it is stated.
