Children's Club Picnic,

A very enjoyable picnic was given by the president and executive of the Wellington After-care Association (for retarded children) to the- mothers and children of the club. Several interested visitors were also present, including Mrs. P. Fraser, Mrs. C. Stewart, M.F., Mrs. Norris, Mrs. Evatt, and Mrs. Ferrar. Two railway buses conveyed the party to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. D. Coutts, Golden Gate, Paremata, I where the weather was perfect. Tables laden with good things to eat were set on the lawn. The mothers, children, and committee played games, and were taken to the beach, a very happy day being spent. The president, Mrs. C. J. Moore, J.P., thanked Mr. and "Mrs. Coutts for their kindness and generosity in lending their home ' and grounds. Musical honours were accorded Mr. and Mrs. Coutts. National Club Party. Attention is drawn to a social evening to be held in the National Club on Monday next. All women members and friends of the National Party and escorts are invited, and an enjoyable evening is anticipated. Rongotai College. The mothers of pupils attending the Rongotai College are invited to attend the annual meeting of the ladies' auxiliary, which is to be held in the college gymnasium next Wednesday, at 2.30 p.m. A full attendance of mothers is desired in order that the plans for the year may be fully discussed. Two Parties Testerday. Contestants in the Plunket Society's Queen Carnival have little time left in which to arrange further fund-1 raising efforts, for all lists and votes must be in at the Plunket rooms by i next Wednesday evening. Yesterday! members of Miss Patricia Gledhill's committee entertained at two separate parties for the,, "Army Queen," Mrs. Eric Reeves being the hostess of one, and the Misses Denise Puttick and Marie Yeats-Brown at a dance in the evening. Mrs. Reeves entertained a number of friends at her own home in Wadestown where the drawingroom was gay with hydrangeas, fuchsias, and golden dahlias. Mrs. ' Reeves wore a smart patterned frock of cyclamen and white, and Miss Gledhill wore a beige frock and coat with brown accessories. Various competitions were held before afternoon tea, prizes being won by Mrs. Thaddeus i McCarthy, Mrs. Richard Chandler, and Miss Marie Gledhill. j Trophies Presented. j The' annual meeting of the Upper I Hutt Women's Institute was held on Tuesday. Reports were read by Mrs.! Fenn, secretary of the arts and crafts circle, and by Mrs. Hyslop, secretary of the drama circle. Mrs. Spencer presented the trophies for the greatest number of points gained for the com-; | petitions during the year, the winners were: General, Mrs. DEws, 1; Mrs. S. j | Braid, 2. Cookery, Mrs. Morley, 1; Mrs. ; DEws, 2. McCurdy Cup, Mrs. Mar- j [ shall. Tiki for most points gained for j all sections, Mrs. D'Ews. Mrs. Heath-' cote, federation president, announced that since Mrs. Rogers, nominated president for the ensuing year, was ill, Mrs. Spencer, retiring president, had consented to officiate in the meantime. Other members of the executive and committee were Mesdames Fenn and J. Hazel wood (vice-presidents), Mrs. Hyslop (secretary), Mrs. H. Williams (treasurer), Mrs. Adams (social secretary), and Mesdames • Braid, sen., S. Braid, Hughes, and Spencer. Mrs. I Heathcote gave a short address and also congratulated Mrs. Hyslop, secretary, and Mrs. Routley on their excellent report and balance-sheet. The institute movement to provide parcels for the soldiers at the front was discussed and found a ready response, and the final arrangements for the dressmaking classes were made. Afternoon tea was served by the outgoing committee. Brigade's War Work. A meeting of the Wellington South 1 Nursing Division of the Si John Am*

bulance Brigade was held recently at the brigade rooms, Vivian Street. A large parcel of hospital comforts for soldiers was handed in by a member of the division. A report was received from Mrs. Whatley on the work done at the meetings held at her home. A number of hospital requirements had been made and packed ready for sending away. A very interesting talk | was given by Mrs. Preston, president of the division, on the history of the Order of St. John. The division was pleased to welcome Sister Brown to the meeting. Mrs. Preston presented the Rhodes Rose Bowl to Miss M. Laughlin, a member of the winning, squad in corps competitions. Roller bandaging was practised under the supervision of Miss Paul, lady superintendent. Building a House with a View. At the March meeting of the Island Bay-Berhampore branch of the League of Mothers, held in the Masonic Hall, Mrs. Gaunt presided over a very large gathering of members and friends. Solos were sung by Mrs. Williams, and the League Choir gave items. Miss Wilson gave an address on the. training of children. She expounded the idea of helping the child build a house with a view. Some of the materials needed,for a house were strength, sunshine, and hospitality, and mothers should help to build strength, kindness, and self-reliance into the character of the child, and to give the child
