HUTT V. W.C.0.8.

LOCAL MATCHES

ANOTHER INTERRUPTION

KILBIRNIE STILL LEAD

The prospect of interesting finishes to the series of senior grade matches §et down to end on Saturday afternoon was ruined by the heavy rainfall. In three of the four matches no further play took place, the points being determined on the first day's play. Hutt and Wellington College Old Boys, however, carried on for a time m the rain at the Hutt Recreation Ground, but eventually they were forced to call »t a day before a win on the first innings had been determined. A win would have made an important difference to the championship positions. Midland and Karori had already won on the first innings against Kilbirnie and.. University respectively, but points were shared equally by the other teams. Kilbirnie, in spite of their loss, still hold the lead, but the other three teams in the top four are close up./ In other grades of cricket on Saturday the experience was much the same as in the senior grade. Some matches were continued for a time, but most were called off without any play on the day. SENIOR RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Hutt 195 drew witb Wellington College Old Boys 156 for seven wickets. With steady, rain making conditions un- j pleasant for batsmen and fieldsmen alike, the Hutt-Wellington College Old Boys match was carried on at the Hutt Recreation Ground I until 3' p.m., at which time a heavy downpour put an end to play. Old Boys had forced tho pace in an endeavour to secure a first Innings' verdict, but found the Hutt marit not , easy of reach, Champness bowling well to secure five wickets at a cost of 12 runs apiece. With Old Boys still requiring 40 runs and having three wickets in hand, the match stopped at a very interesting stage. . J. Lamason gave a forceful exhibition of batting. The majority of- : his strokes were beautifully timed, the .ball travelling to the boundary at a pace that gave the fieldsmen little opportunity for an Interception. His brother, however, collected most runs for Old Boys playing one of his most serviceable knocks in making 60, of which 37 were made on the first day of the match. Leading the Hutt attack Champness proved a thorn in the side of Old Boys, and through his efforts Hutt were given a winning chance. It was anybody's game when play ceased. ' Details: — HUTT.
