THE CRICKET FIELD
NOTED PLAYERS OF THE PAST
EXCELLENT TALENT FOR VETERANS' MATCH
Not a little of the Plunket Shield cricket in Wellington during the Christmas-New Year holiday period was disappointing. The local representatives still had an opportunity ~ of performing as a side in line with expectations in meeting Otago, but as this match is being played in Dunedin, Wellington enthusiasts have to look to something neater at hand to compensate them for what they missed in the big matches at the Basin Reserve. They have an attraction, and if it proves to be as good as was the case last season, it will serve to put a fine flourishing touch to the season's principal events. It is the veterans' match, and all who saw McGirr, Gilligan, and. company in this event last, season will, know that it holds some^ thing really, good in"store. It is to be played, at the. Basin Reserve in a fortnight's.time, and taking part will.be some.of the best knewn of New Zealand's past representatives. .
The Wellington Cricket Association's management committee has set up a special sub-committee""to make" the necessary arrangements, for the ; veterans' match, and, from what has been done already, the prospects , are that the match will have even' greater' importance' and interest than • was the case last year. This time it is to be a preliminary to a veterans' match with Auckland, and it seems that there will be some strorig candidates for the. northern trip. Some of the past representatives are capable of form that would make them serious contenders for places in res presentative-sides today. At any rate they are keen to" show how. things should.be-.done when it comes to handling the bat or' serving, up' disconcerting deliveries, and - their , illustration of■ho'w,th'ey can still do it should make the match' ,' an' entertaining one. Amongst the players who, it is hoped, will be taking part are D. C. Collins, R. de R. Worker, W. S. Brice, and H. M. 'McGirr. It ,was in last- season's match that McGirr niade a century— and a great display he gave. The wicket-keeping of F. W. Gilligan (formerly of Essex and. member of: one of England's best-known .cricketing families) was also a feature, and this fine cricketer is again being .invited. Alex. Bruce is another, along, with several who also have figured prominently as representatives. - - '
