POULTRY INDUSTRY
BOARDS ACTIVITIES
. The.New Zealand Poultry Board de», cided at a recent meeting to take actioa; against persons who were evading the; requirements of the Poultry Registra-' tion Act. It was stated that eightj months of the year had gone by and*' all poultry keepers liable for registra-' tion had received at least two re-? minders, neither of which was requiredby law. In those circumstances the Board felt that, in justice to those who", did pay, the defaulters should b*!1 brought to book.
The chairman reported that he had not received a reply from the com-;, mercial branch of the Railway Depart-? ment on the question of freight charges^ on eggs. The shortage of eggs in' Wel-< lington and other centres was partly]; due to the very high cost of railway transport for small quantities of eggs. As the greater bulk of eggs came from the small poultry keepers, it was in' the interests of the consuming public that all these suppliers be encouraged to send their supplies to the larger centres of population. -At "present freight charges were keeping those eggs out of'such areas, hence the shortage, high price, and complaints about quality.
