PROGRESS OF RECRUITING
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—-In this evening's "Post" is a report of the first of a riew series of recruiting rallies, in the form of community sings. The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), in the course of his appeal for recruits, said that we in New Zealand, five months after the outbreak of war, are unable to make up the full strength of the first few units of troops for overseas, stating that the Second Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, now in camp, was not yet up to full strength. On another page of "The Post", the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), speaking at Auckland on February 5, expressed pleasure with the progress of recruiting and revealed that there were 3500 fit men available for the Third Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Now, sir, your paper has the reputation for authentic statements. The public would be very grateful if they could be informed which statement is correct.—l am, etc., CURIOUS. February 6.
