ESPERANTO
The Wellington Esperanto Club opened its- 1940 season, on Monday evening In its clubrooms, 61 Lower Cuba Street.
Mr. V. J. Leek; the president, welcomed old and new members and wished them success in their studies during 1940. All newcomers were placed under the jurisdiction of Mr. Bernfeld, late of Vienna, who had veritable tyros speaking simple sentences at the end of an hour's tuition. The results of last year's examination were announced, special mention being made of Miss Joan . Rogerson, who gained almost 100 per cent, marks after only one year of study.
Gratification at the interest taken in Esperanto, and the response given by the Karori citizens, was expressed by the president, Mr.. Nelson Hill, at the first meeting of the Karori Society last night. The urgent necessity of an international language was emphasised. Mr. Erwin Bernfeld, who conducted the classes, gave an interesting talk on living conditions in Vienna.
