RECEPTION AT WAIKANAE
MR. AND MRS. J. J. MCGRATH ENTERTAIN
The final social function of the Eucharistic - Congress took place at "The Curragh," the Waikanae residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McGrath, of
Oriental Bay, Wellington, when on a glorious summer day they were host and hostess to-his Excellency the Papal Legate and over two hundred, guests. The gathering took the form of a combined afternoon tea, cocktail, and garden party."
The grounds, which .comprise two acres laid out in lawns, flower beds, and native shrubs, and abbut ten acres of native bush, • were much admired. The reception took place in the draw-ing-room and- the large -foyer1 where there was ample accommodation for the guests. : %
Among those present were his Excellency the Papal, Legate, his Grace l Archbishop O'Shea, also his liOrdship Bishop Gleeson,: Monsignor" King, Dr. Hannan, Fathers Ryan, Scanlon, Gilbert, and McCarthy, all of Australia, and the following New Zealand clergy: Monsignors Connolly (Wellington), Cullen (Hawera),' McManus (Palmerston North), Howard (Irivercargill), Dr. McRae (Wellington), Fathers Murphy (Whangarei), Alick (Auckland), Wander, Aarts, and Wiggern' (Rotorua), Eccleston (Tauranga), Dumphy (Otahuhu), Vafi Beck (Tokaanu), O'Connor (Frankton Junction), Minogue (New Plymouth), Doolaghty (Taihape), Dynan and Wall (Jerusalem), Hanna (Otaki), Seymour (Nelson), McGrath and O'Meeghan (Christchurch), Murphy (Invercargill),' Ainsworth/ Buist, Cullen, Dr. Geaney, Gartlan, Joyce, Minchan, O'Connell, arid Spillane (all of Wellington). The three New Zealand Knights of St. Gregory, Messrs. P. D. Hoskins, Bernard McCarthy, and M. F. Bourke, were also present, as well as Dr. Halliday Sutherland (Scotland), the Mayor: and Mayoress of Otaki, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Harper (Otaki), Mr. Pat McGrath (Bulls), Mrs. Graham Robertson and Miss Whitcombe (Te Horo); Mrs. W. H. McMenamin (Christchurch), the Hon. W. Perry and Mrs. Perry, Mr. and Mrs. H. F. O'Leary, Mlss Wilkinson,. Mrs. T. Wilkinson, Mr. and Mrs. E. Casey, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Guscott, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. His Excellency expressed a wish "to inspect the native 'bush, and after he had walked through the virgin forest, which he greatly admired, the guests were individually presented .to him, and this concluded the very happy gathering, the enthusiasm of everyone being a joy to his Excellency and his hosts. , '
