ANOTHER WINNER

F. SMITH'S GOOD SEASON

(Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, February 6. Gold Money Song added yet another to the list of successes scored by trainer F. Smith when he led home his division of the Putarurit Stakes at Matamata. This colt is a half-brother to First Money Song, a winner at Thames, and he may add to his record at Rotorua in the event for two- and three-year-olds. In this race he cannot be rehandicapped, for .he won under weightrfor-age conditions last Saturday.

What must be almost a record was registered by Matamata trainer R, Martin in the Putaruru Stakes, for he saddled up no fewer than six horses in this event, all running in different iownership.- His charges were- Prince Pilot, Paymaster, Valsome, Lord Waitangi, Captain Bell, and Gold Blaze. The best of them were Paymaster, who finished" second to Gold Money Song iin the first division, and Valsome^ who was third in the other division, .

The Cardinal was withdrawn from his Matamata Cup engagement on account of the fact that his connections preferred to wait for the Rotorua Cup this week, and the improved track there will be in his favour. He is reported as being back in his best form; ■.•"■. :■ • ■ '■• ■ ■ •■•'• ' ■•■ . .' '~. ' .

A lightweight possibility in the highweight races at Rotorua is the maiden candidate Australian Star, who appears to stick oh well. At the. last Waipa Meeting he took part in.a great finish over seven furlongs, finishing fourth, less than half a length behind Clipper, Town Section, and Sunny Downs, with Cornish behind him. A reproduction of form will make him dangerous at Rotorua.

Little has been heard of late of the speedy Valimeen, who was in the boom for some of her earlier engagements. Last season this galloper appeared to develop solidity and surprised by the mannervin which she fought on in Her races, so perhaps she will do better frpm now on. She should hold a good lightweight's: chance in the sprint at Rotbrua, for she has speed and is able to get a position in the early part.
