' Lady Leigh was very lame- when she pulled up. after contesting the Craven Plate at Riccarton last Saturday and her racing career may be nearly over. * Earlier in the sea's'dn it was intended to retire her, but she has since won two races, including the C.J.C. Great Night, who, won' the; Trial Stakes at Riccarton last Saturday, is a 'four-year-old mare by Nightmarch from Acceptable's dam Bonny Dawn, and she is owned by her breeder, Mr. R. J. Murphy,* of Wellington. Sovereign Lady does not run many bad races on her home track, but she did so in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. She began slowly and never became prominent. The Duel, wh6 won the Halswell Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, is a six-year-old stallion by the Greyspear horse Rapier out of the Martian —Stepdancer mare Warlove, a fullsister to Warstepand the dam previously of Amor and Spoon. In, the spring he was capable of giving weight and an easy beating to Not Out at Rangiora.
