SPROUTING SANDBAGS

The prevalence of sandbags here and at the front recalls a curious happening during the last war, says the Manchester Guardian." A special consignment of sandbags was ordered from a Northern town and sent to a certain destination in the Flanders front line. Presently due acknowledgment was made of the consignment's arrival, and a little later came the information that a young cornfield had sprouted and grown up round the parapet, with such luxuriance that the camouflage was complete and the enemy had forgotten the existence; of that portion of the line. It was discovered oh inquiry that the. consignment of sandbags had really consisted of renovated wheatbags. No doubt grains of corn left m the bags had germinated • in\ the sand and produced the totally unexpected crop of camouflaging corn. It might not be a bad idea to make the sandbags sprout on purpose and so add a new and natural camouflage to the artificial ingenuities of the professional artist. But it would be odd if that happened to the sandbags protecting shops.
