CAPTAIN H. C. MAYO, R.N.

CAPT. W. S. F. MACLEOD, R.N.

(By Air Mail, from "The Post's" London .. Representative.) LONDON, January 16. ' Captain William Simon Fraser Macleod, C.V.0., 0.8. E., R.N., who died at West Byfieet, Surrey, on January 13, aged 51, commanded H.M.A.S. Australia in which the Duke of Gloucester returned from his Australian and New Zealand tour in 1935. He was the elder son of the late Mr. S. J. F. Macleod, K.C., and was educated at Cheltenham. He entered the Navy in 1904 and was present at the battle of Heligoland Bight and Jutland ;in H.M.S. Fearless. In 1933 he was lent to the Royal Australian Navy jfor two years.

Captain Macleod retired in 1936. In 1920 he married Constance, daughter of the late Colonel R. C. Andrews, Indian Army, and had one son.

(By Air Mail, from "The Post's" London Representative.) LONDON, January 16. The death occurred on New Year's j Eve, at his home in Weymouth, of Captain H. C. Mayo, 0.8. E., R.N. (ret.), County Commander for Dftrset Scouts. Captain Mayo, who was 58, had a distinguished career in the Royal I Navy and the Merchant Service and was very well known in the Scout movement. When he left the training ship Worcester in 1895, Captain Mayo joined the New Zealand Shipping Company and remained there until 1904, when he joined the Cunard Company. During eight years with that company he commanded the Lusitania and was in the Royal Naval Reserve guard of honour at King Edward's Coronation. He served with the battle-cruiser Princess Royal in 1914-18, and was in | the battles of Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank, and Jutland. Afterwards he j was engaged in mine-sweeping work and held a post at the Admiralty. In 1930 he was in chrage of fishery protection in Scotland on H.M.S. Spey and retired with the rank of captdin in 1932, In 1937-38 he was engaged in non-intervention patrol work in Spain, and was Chief of Staff at Marseilles under the International Board for non-intervention.
