WEATHER FORECAST
Forecast for Wellington:—
Light north-west winds, freshening somewhat tomorrow. Weather fair to fine.
The Dominion forecast, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for moderate south-westerly winds predominating at first, but later tending north-westerly o*r northerly and freshening from Cook Strait southwards. Isolated showers are still probable, but the weather will be mainly fair to fine and mild, but becoming unsettled later, however, in the far north and in the southrwest.
The last of the present series of westerly depressions crossed the South Island during yesterday, and by this morning had crossed most of the North Island. Conditions are also disturbed across the north Tasman Sea. Fresh to strong winds from a westerly quarter prevailed yesterday, reaching gale force in a number of places. A more definite change to the south-west followed the passing of the depression, but about parts of Cook Strait the change was to the south-east. . By this morning northerlies or north-westerlies had set in again south of Westport and Kaikoura, and the winds had moderated generally. Scattered showers, and in some of the South Island ranges light snow, accompanied the southwesterly change and temperatures became cooler, but for the most part the weather has been fair to fine. Any falls of rain were only light, 20 points at Cape Egmont, 21 points at Westport. and 24 points at Puysegur Point being the heaviest reported. Except for some scattered showers in the Auckland Province and in the far south, fair to fine weather continues today.
Following some showers in the early morning, the remainder of the day in Auckland yesterday was fair to cloudy with moderate temperatures. The_»wind was a fresh to strong south-westerly, which by this morning had moderated, but further showers were falling at 9 a.m. The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 60.4 degrees and 58.8 degrees.
The weather in Wellington yesterday was beautifully fine and sunny, with a moderate to fresh westerly breeze. The wind changed to a light south-easterly about 10 p.m., and some rain, totalling only 6 points, fell in the early morning. This ceased about dawn, and the sky had cleared by 9 a.m. The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 70.0 degrees and 50.5 degrees, and the sunshine amounted to 13.3 hours.
In Christchurch the weather yesterday morning was fine and clear, with a moderate south-west wind. The wind freshened in the afternoon, bringing cool and cloudy conditions and occasional . passing showers. However, the skies cleared again this morning, and the wind had turned to a light northerly. The maximum temperature yesterday was 71.8 degrees and the minimum temperature was 48.5 degrees.
A strong, cool south-west wind blew all yesterday in Dunedin, and a shower or two fell in the morning, but otherwise the weather was fair" to cloudy with intermittent sunshine. Similar conditions prevailed this morning, although the wind had dropped.
