SOVIET OBJECTIVE
DETERMINED ATTACK
'■ ' MANNERHEIM LINE
(Daventry Broadcast.) LONDON, Wednesday Night.
, The Russians today made another determined attack lo'slash the left wing of the Mannerheim defences north of Lake Ladoga. One correspondent suggests that the Soviet's objective appears to be the cutting of the railway running north.
Another Russian attack today was directed against the main road which runs through the middle of the Mannerheim Line to Wiborg. It will be recalled that three days ago Soviet loud-speakers informed the Finns that this would be done in 48 hours,, but this attack was repulsed by the Finns, as was.another in the centre of the isthmus.
Russian planes are reported today to have attacked a German merchant ship and a Finnish steamer off the Aland Islands. The German steamer went aground " earlier, .and two Russian planes made repeated attempts to bomb it today without success. The Finnish steamer was of 1000 tons, and the Russian planes are said to have dropped fifteen bombs. There were no direct hits, but one bomb exploded close enough to sink the ship. While the crew were taking to the lifeboats they ■were machine-gunned by the. Russians, but there were no casualties.
