THANKS TO BRITAIN
ASAMA MARU'S EXISTENCE
STRANDED AT HONG KONG
(Received January 25, 11.30, a.m.)
LONDON, January 24.
It is learned that the Japanese Foreign Office has informed the British Ambassador, Sir Robert Craigie, that Japan takes a serious view of the Asama Maru incident. Britain will reply soon.
It is recalled that the Asama Maru ran ashore in a fortified area at Hong Kong in 1937, and it was feared she might become a total wreck, but, despite the fact that she lay in a strategic zone, Britain permitted a Japanese company to undertake salvage operations, without, which the vessel probably would not have been afloat today.
