YESTERDAY'S MARKETS

A normal entry of beef met with steady competition at the Westneld stock sale yesterday, the demand only slackening towards the .end. Lawrates were fully maintained. Good quality was plentiful in the average calf yarding, values ruling very firm in consequence. A smaller than average mutton entry sold at .improved rates. Lamb prices also improved. A heavy pig entry met with keen competition, making full'late rates. The entry of fat cattle at Burnside included three pens of heavy oxen Values were down by 10s a head at the start, but there was a firming later to the extent of 20s. The sale closed with values back' to the opening levels. In a medium entry, stores sold firmly at late rates and were in keen demand. A few good, heavy cows made to £11. 10s The entry of fat sheep included only a few pens of prime-heavy sorts. Good wethers sold firmly at late levels, but heavy ewes were down by 2s a head. More than 1000 fat lambs were offered, with only a few pens of butchers' weights. The market was very firm on recent values. Fat pigs opened at unchanged values, but there was an easing ,as the auction progressed. Store pigs were down by 3s to 4s a head.

PAHIATUA SALE,

The Associated Auctioneers report as follows on Tuesday's Pahiatua SaAn" entry of 2800 sheep, mostly lambs, was offered to a good attendance of buyers. Wairarapa and Southern Hawke's Bay buyers were present, but most of the yarding remained in the district. All pens were sold at auction and prices remained firm throughout. In the majority of cases the sale was 6d to Is better than the previous week's offering. Quotations: B.F. lambs, good, 18s to 17s; medium, 15s to 13s 3d; shorn wether lambs, good 15s 8d to 14s, medium 12s to 8s 6d, small 6s 6d to 5s Id; b.f. lambs, small 9s 6d to 7s 2d; ewe lambs, 13s Id to 8s 4d; two-tooth wethers, 16s to 14s; fattening ewes, 10s.

ADDINGTON MARKET.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 24. At the Addington stock market today a total of about 18,000 sheep were forward, of which about 10,000 were in the store lamb section. The store lambs sold very keenly, making up ±o 22s for the best, with numerous other lines at from' 19s to 21s Bd. Several pens of short lambs from the Chatham Islands sold at similar prices. The large penning included few backward lines, and there was a complete disposal. The fat lambs comprised 1800 head, and the improved export schedule of £d a lb was reflected in the prices. The schedule for 36's is now 8 5-Bd. Butchers paid in excess of B|d for their needs. The fat sheep were of indifferent quality. The penning totalled 4500. Values were little changed, but there was much freer buying by exporters for light ewes. The best of the wethers sold at from 28s to 31s, good to medium at from 25s to 27s 6d, and light down to 19s. Good ewes ranged from 23s to 255, with some tops at Is more, ordinary 14s to 17s, and light down to 11s. Five hundred and fifty fat cattle, far in excess of the demand at this time of the year, were yarded. Values eased by l'ss to 20s a head in the later stages of the sale. Good steers sold at from £15 to £17, and, with the tops selling to £19 17s 6d, averaged from £13 to £14 10s. The best cows made to £12, and heifers to £13, but many low-conditioned sorts realised under £6.
