EMBARGO ON JAPAN

MR. PITTMAN'S PREDICTION

WASHINGTON, January 21,

The chairman of the Foreign Kelations Committee of the .Senate, Senator Key Pittmaii, predicted that Congress would approve an embargo against Japan unless the Administration decides to oppose it. He added that Congressional sentiment for an embargo was growing despite the barrage of Japanese propaganda. c The State .Department professed difficulty in understanding Tokio Press reports regarding continuation of the trade agreement unless the reports referred to the announcement by the United States Treasury that application of the existing laws would be continued. It was indicated that a modus vivendi was not yet in sight.
