LAST LEGAL BOND

COULD BE BROKEN

CANADA AND PRIVY COUNCIL

(Received January 22, 10 a.m.)

OTTAWA, January 21

In connection with the decision of the Canadian Supreme Court that Parliament may abolish the right of appeal to the Privy Council, the Canadian Press Association states: "If Parliament should exercise this authority it would establish the Supreme Court as the court of last resort for all rfvil and constitutional matters arising in Canada and would sever the Dominion's last legal bond of submission to the Mother Country."

The decision, which generally is regarded as one of the most important in recent years, was concurred in by four of the six Supreme Court Judges. They ha.d been asked to decide whether Parliament was competent to enact a Bill such as that which was introduced last session to abolish the appeal to the crown.
