IN A FRENCH CAFE

ROYALTY ENTERTAINED

"I am so happy and proud that I hardly know what lam doing," said Madame Jeanne. Madame Jeanne runs the little cafe in France where King George lunched one day during his visit to the British Expeditionary Force.

The King had his meal sitting on a kitchen chair in the bar-room. The, menu v/as chicken pie, Christmas pud-* ding, and cheese, and guardsmen -acted as waiters.

Mme. Jeanne recently had her cafe taken over as the corporals' mess of a famous Guards regiment. She received only an hour's notice to expect "an important guest" and thought it might be General Gamelin. Then she read in the paper that the King was in this sector, and guessed who the important person might be. She found she had just time to send her waitress into the nearby town for a bouquet of flowers. ,

She is glad she got those flowers in time. When the King arrived he complimented her on them. He also showed great interest in the news that her husband is serving in the Maginot Line, and that she is carrying on alone.

"I will have such a | letter to write to my husband. Perhaps he will hardly believe it," she said. "I gave him the flowers, and he was charming. I liked his unassuming manner. He came in. here just as one of your fine young Guardsmen would come in—simple and natural."
