SANK IN PIECES
TORPEDOED DUTCH LINER
LISBON, January 7,
The captain of the Dutch motor-ship Arendskerk, which was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat in the Bay of/Biscay, stated that they encountered a hail of bullets from the submarine, which commanded him to stop. The first officer was ordered aboard the submarine with the ship's papers. The captain of the submarine offered the officer a cigarette and said it was a pity to sink such a good ship, but the cargo was contraband inasmuch as it was bound for South Africa, which was an enemy country. .
"The submarine towed bur boat back and gave us half an hour to leave in the boats," the captain continued. "Thirty minutes later we saw the whole deck and the masts and cargo -blown up. The Arendskerk sank in pieces. The. Italian steamer Fedora picked us up and two hours later we boarded the Dutch steamer PoelauBras. We lost everything but our clothing." '
