COLDEST SINCE 1866 IN ESTONIA
WELL BELOW ZERO
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, January 17. • Further freezing weather has gripped Europe. .Estonia is experiencing its coldest winter since 1866, with the temperature 82 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit). Bitter winds have sent Moscow's temperature to 76 below freezing point, and all schools are closed. Denmark records temperatures of 50 degrees below freezing point, resulting in deaths and immobilising shipping in the harbours, causing a coal shortage. The censorship prohibits mention of Britain's weather. [ •■ (Daventry Broadcast.) LONDON, Wednesday Night. Reports coming in today show that the whole of Europe is ice-bound, and in many places the temperatures arc i much lower than they have been for years. On the Western Front heavy snow has put a stop to. everything except patrol activity. The Danube is frozen from bank to bank, and where it runs through Hungary 1200 ships are held up. About one thousand, including many oil tankers and grain ships, are bound for Germany, and the fact that they are frozen in is adding greatly to Germany's supply difficulty. In Estonia 45 degrees of frost are recorded, and children are forbidden to go to school. In Moscow 79 degrees of frost were recorded today, and the| hospitals are busy dealing with cases of frostbite, and the underground trains are packed with people seeking relief from the cold. ■ .■ , -..■-.-
