TOP PRICE 2000GNS

YEARLING SALES

OVERSEAS BUYERS ACTIVE

Of a recqrd catalogue of 227 yearlings presented at the 14th National Sales, held.at Trentham yesterday, 133 lots were disposed of for a total of 28,410gn5. The early indications were that, in the absence of the strong bench of Australian buyers of twelve months ago, a somewhat dull market would eventuate, but there were oc- j casions throughout the day when bidding took quite a brisk turn, and at an advanced stage of the afternoon the top price was forthcoming. j The figure of 2000gns was attained for a Bulandshar colt out of the Tea! Tray mare Tea Tattle, Mr. C. W.; Wheeler, of Adelaide, who was a very active agent and buyer throughout, purchasing him on behalf of Mr. J. Wren, of Melbourne. The auctioneer started the bidding off at 500gns, and Mr. Wheeler jumped the bidding from 600gns to lOOOgns with a yiew to eliminating opposition. However, the act failed to do so, and the figure steadily advanced to- 2000gns. In three other instances Mr. Wheeler lodged the final bid, and J. T. Jamieson, the former New Zealand trainer, secured three lots, going to 750gns for a brown colt by Foxbridge from Speedmint. Other Australians active were Mr. J. Wheeler, who bought five fillies, the highest priced one being by Posterity—Variable at 260gns. Mr. U. Shannon, as agent, bought two, going to 475Jgns for the Phaleron Bay— Going Gay colt. Mr. E. J. Watt's agent purchased a very nice colt by Tiderace from Gold Trail for 800gns, and Mr. W. Longworth, a Phaleron Bay—Hunting Lodge colt for 425gns. Messrs. Wm. Ihglis and Son took two, paying 400ghs for a Foxbridge—lthaca colt. Dr. Nigel Smith bought a couple of colts by Solicitor General. Altogether, the Australians bought 22 lots for a total of 8790gns. Auckland buyers operated more freely than usual, buying 14 lots, the highest price being paid by Mr. T. Impey, who went to 525gns for a brown colt by Nightmarch from Variant. Mr. A. J. Court got a colt by Bulandshar from Pass On, a halfsister to the dam of Beauliyre,, for 380gns. . Of the other local buyers, Mr. H. D. Greenwood paid 700gns for a brown colt by Foxbridge-from Rose Latour, Mr. W. M. Shand, also of Christchurch, the chestnut colt by Tiderace from My Own for 850gns, Mr. W. H. Gaisford 625gns for the brown colt by Nightmarch from Praise, the family with which he has done so well, and Mr. G. J. Barton paid 525gns for the colt by Phaleron Bay from Cherry Pie. Of the new sires the few representatives of Theio attracted attention, especially the two grey fillies and the' grey colt. The filly out of Sicilian has all the markings, including the spots of the brilliant horses of the Roi Herode line. A couple of colts by Baffles created competition, and the best of the stock of Man's Pal were also in demand. The highest prided filly was the Phaleron Bay—Baylock, at 550gns, purchased by Wright, Stephenson and Co., as agents.
