The old Newtown School has been fitted up to receive parties of school children who visit the Exhibition. At j present the bookings total 3000! The j first of the children to arrive, 26 of the Education Department's correspondence schools, have been accommodated. Other parties will arrive next I week. The Exhibition authorities have agreed to issue a three-day admission ticket at the cost of Is 6d for all members of school parties, irrespective .of age. The secretary of the Exhibition education committee, Mr. W. I.; Deavoll, said today that the object of the scheme was to "give maximum service at reasonable cost. Children and teachers would each be required to pay 6s a day j for the - school accommodation. The daily charge would cover three meals and bed for roll members of the school ..party, one return tram fare between the railway station or ferry wharf and Newtown. for school pupils only, irrespective of age, and one return tram fare for school pupils only from Newtown to the Exhibition. The.scheme had been drawn up to remove doubts in the minds of parents that their children might not be properly, cared for. The position had been thoroughly investigated, and' it i had been decided to provide for 320 children, 120 girls and. 200 boys, at any one time. The girls w.ould be housed in .a separate single-storey house of four rooms, each 24ft 6in by 22ft, with a-corridor Bft wide, 30 girls to the. room, with three teachers or adults inj
charge. The boys would be placed in five rooms in the main building, and two rooms in the Berhampore School close by. Tiers of bunks with woolpack bottoms would be provided, but each child was expected to bring two blankets, sheets if desired. Paliasses and bolsters would be supplied. Washing facilities would be provided, but children must bring their own towels and washing bags. -
The cooking facilities would provide breakfast and a hot meal in the evening, and lunches! would be prepared. A competent cooking and dining-room staff had been selected. Provision had been made for a sick room for boys and one for girls, and there would be regular inspections by a school medical officer. Fh'st aid outfits would be available. •
