STATE HOUSES
SHORTAGE OF MATERIALS
Expressing concern at the shortage of certain materials required for State housing purposes, the Minister of Housing (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) stated at Auckland yesterday that New Zealand would carry on with its housing scheme, but supplies of pipes and other plumbing material and wire for electric work would have to be imported from America, reports the "Star." The Government would also purchase wire for nails and other materials from Australia, if obtainable. The psychology of fear was ruling to a large extent in New Zealand, the Minister said. He meant by that that those who held supplies were holding on to them in case shipments were stopped altogether. "We are now checking up on stocks of builders' materials throughout the Dominion] with a view to ascertaining the exact position," he added. "The Government has powers under the war regulations to take supplies required if it is found that anybody is holding on to them 'unreasonably.'"
