GIRAFFE BORN IN SYDNEY
ZOO
(From "Tbe Post's" Representative.)
SYDNEY, November 13,
A giraffe was born a few days ago at the Taronga Park Zoo, Sydney. It is, the first giraffe to be born in Sydney and the second in Australia. The baby, which has been named Taronga, was 6ft 4in in height and weighed 1501b at birth. Its mother and father, born and bred in Tanganyika, are each nearly 18ft in height. The baby will not be on exhibition for many days yet, because, although it is in good condition, giraffes are delicate animals to rear. The Taronga Park authorities are taking no chances,' and every precaution is being taken to guard its health. I In 1938 "Mighty High" was born m the Perth Zoo, the first giraffe born m' Australia. Two days later it died, and: its father, "High," and its mother,! "Mighty,-" were inconsolable for sev- ; eral months. I The mother and father of Taronga arrived in Sydney in November, 1935, from Africa, where they were captured by the noted German zoologist and hunter, Christopher Schultz, who brought them to Sydney.
