WAR IN CHINA
STATE OF INTERIOR
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day,
Provinces in the interior of China have benefited industrially as the result of the conflict with Japan. Wages have risen considerably, but have been offset by a higher cost of living, according to Mr. and Mrs. O. Metcalfe, of Auckland, who have returned after five years in the west of China with the China Inland Mission. Mr. Metcalfe said that many wealthy Chinese driven from the coastal provinces by the war were supplying the capital for the development of mines and other natural resources. This had resulted in rapid industrialisation of the interior areas. The demand for labour had meant a rise in wages, but costs were high, partly because of the depreciation of the Chinese currency.Actually, the purchasing power of the Chinese »worker was about the same as before.
