Developments in the organisation of, industry during the past twenty years have greatly facilitated its adaptation . tor war conditions, A . notable ex^ ' ample is the British iron and steel ' industry. In the last war great ex--" penditure of money and effort was involved in bringing former uneconomic units into operation to obtain maximum output. The' waste thus entailed is now eliminated as a result of the operations of the British Iron and Steel Federation.
A leading figure in the industry points out that the steel industry is now capable of prducing at least 33 per cent, more tonnage yearly than in 1917.
The improvement is particularly striking in the case, of basic steel, th« average annual production of ■ which over the period 1933 to 1938 increased by 121 per cent, as compared with th« period 1913 to 1918.. The comparison of pig iron production in the same period shows an increase of 56 per cent.
