GOOD SPORT PROMISED

FEILDING'S OPENING

WIDE RANGE FOR BETTORS

The distinction of providing the main sport in the Dominion's galloping arena this week falls to the Feilding Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, which will be held on the popular Feilding course tomorrow and on Saturday. This is one of the old-established pre-holiday fixtures, and it is a meeting of some substance in itself, besides being a link in the form preludes for the Christmas and New Year carnival.

Though defections were somewhat heavy at the acceptances, the fields for the opening day tomorrow are still of satisfactory dimensions for good betting pools. The totalisator will be conducted under the old 75-25 system, which this club, one of the first to install an electric machine, has always used. There has been sufficient recent rain in the district to assure a splendid track. The weather gives promise of being more settled again and the prospects are for summerlike conditions tomorrow. AN OPEN ISSUE. Until four years. ago the Feilding Cup was the feature of the opening day in November, but now this race figures on the Easter programme and the Manchester Handicap, a different race only in name, is the main item of the spring fixture. Only eight out of the 20 horses nominated remain in tomorrow's field, but they are,an even lot.

At the head of the present list is Wotan, who won the race last year under 8.5 (carried 8.0) and whose only two wins since his Melbourne Cup success have been on the Feilding course. He disappointed recently at Stratford, but he is a horse like that and the rule of horses for courses is'one that fop ever- keeps on producing illustrations. The form in the race is not good. Tidewaiter was not too lucky at the Wellington Meeting and he would require only to manage the track to be dangerous with his impost here. Dainty Sue was backed and beaten at Riccarton, but she* has done well since. Charade was a winner in weak open class at Napier early in the month, Du Maurier was beaten only a head by Taurangi at Stratford, form that now reads good, and Kaiwaka, who ran out of hacks with some fine efforts, was a close third in Taurangi's race at Stratford and later on that day was second to Russian Ballet in the highweight.

The Plying Handicap sees the reappearance of Amigo, who has not raced since he brilliantly won the principal sprint at Trentham last July, but at his present place in the weights he may be the better for a race. Russian Ballet, Brunhild, and Sleeveless look the best of the form engaged, but Race Call, Laughing Lass, and Screen Star are also distinct prospects on this course.

event in the Kiwitea Handicap, run at a higher minimum. This is a race that would suit Kaiwaka, if reserved, and Notium has previously done well on the Feilding course, where he has won at the Easter fixture the last two years. Gaily, Boomerang, Verey Lights, and Colonel Bogey are other prospects, particularly the last-named, whose Trentham form among the hacks was most impressive.

I In the Feilding Juvenile Stakes Indore represents the only winning form. Rich Blood, who raced at Auckland, is a full-brother to Sporting Blood, a family that has been always highly successful, and Brahman .(a Bulandshar colt) and Chang (an Inflation colt) are newcomers with a track reputation. Others in the field who have not raced are Air Flight, Talenta, and Ringling. It is therefore a race in which there might be an upset. In the Kowhai Hack Handicap, Malik Kafur. Lindrum,; Trench .Law, and Regicide look the best form, with Trilitha, Vadanoe, Chere Amie, and Chandlery other prospects. The favourites for the Fitzroy Hack Handicap will probably be Saxon Tor and Siglow, though Viraciousi Tuatara, and Harina will also have, good support. In the Waituna Hurdles, Golden Ridge would require only to jump better than at Levin to make the way of Disturbed, Fossicker, and Hethers a path of thorns. In the Aorangi. Trial Plate those in demand promise to include Little Robin, Colibri. Cornaro, Kilometre, Mahaina, Regale, and Sea Link. FORM AND CARD.
