PRICES COMPARED
AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND
Replying to a point raised by a Morrinsville .correspondent,, the Minister made the' following ? statement comparing prices agreed upon for New Zealand and Australia:—!
"Discussions regarding sale of Australian and New ■ Zealand biitter and cheese were conducted on the basis of ; sterling, London market prices with appropriate■■"■■ price margins in favour.of New ; Zealand. The actual purchase prices by the United Kingdom Government are sterling prices f.o.b/ Aus r tralia, and f.o.b.' New. Zealand, which were arrived at by the deduction of the appropriate charges from f.o.b. to London. There is a variation in these charges f.o.b. to London as between Australia and New Zealand, and an additional factor is the different rate of exchange Australia compared with New Zealand.
"A Press statement reports that in I respect of Australian butter the United Kingdom purchase price is equivalent to 137s 2d f.o.b. Australia currency, for choicest grade. This Australian currency f.o.b. price compares with the New Zealand currency f.o.b. price' of 139s 7£d, thus showing a margin in. favour of New Zealand of 2s sid. : "in- respect of cheese the comparative figures aret-—'Australia, 90 points and over, 745'4df.0.bl Australian currency; New Zealand,, finest and first grade y 79s 9d f;O;b.,New Zealand currency, thus showing a margin in favour of New Zealand of 5s 5d."
