Caught by the engine of an Auck-land-Swanson train when he was run- '; iting over the St. Jude's Street level '.. crossing, Avondale, at about 3 o'clock ')• yesterday afternoon, a 10-year-old boy v ~ was carried for more than a quarter of'a mile on the cowcatcher'before the train was stopped. The driver was not %r- aware of the accident until he noticed ' that shiligle from the track was being thrown up in front of the engine. When '•■•-'■-the-train was 'stopped if was found that the boy's leg had been caught between the track and the cowcatcher. The injured lad was Kenneth Alfred Waldron, son of Mr. A. R. Waldron, of Avondale. He was quite conscious when he was pulled clear with some - "difficulty by the engine crew. His leg was extensively lacerated and he suf-

fered severe shock. | After receiving attention froni a doctor, the boy was taken in a St. John ambulance to the Auckland Hospital. His condition at a late hour last night was reported to be serious.
