A pleasant little function took place on Tuesday at the Maranui Church Hall,. Kilbirnie, when the members of the Lyall Bay Red Cross (sub-centre) received their certificates in home nursing. Mrs. Cronin sang "Robin Adair" and "Love Has Eyes," and Mr. Cronin gave a short talk on "World Affairs." Captain Galloway spoke on the far-reaching merits of the Red Cross Association. Mr. and Mrs. Sweetapple and Mr. K. Bruce also, contributed items. The opportunity was taken to present Mrs. H. Q. Bruce (lecturer) and Mrs. L. Bruce (demonstrator) with tokens of regard. Mr. and Mrs. Angus, from the Central Red Cross, and Mrs. J. Telford, secretary, Miramar, were also present. An enjoyable supper was handed round. Hospital Sympathisers. Robertson, Crippled Children Society, and the Rotary Club. Rhododendron Dell. Visitors to Wellington for the Exhibition will appreciate ari opportunity of visiting the Sir Truby King and Lady Truby King Karitane Hospital on Melrose Heighls I before they return home. The j hospital grounds will be open to the | public tomorrow, when visitors will be able to walk in the lovely rhododendron dell and view the magnificent panorama of the Exhibition and the surrounding district. Afternoon tea will' be served on the tennis courts. Buses leave from Courtenay Place at regular intervals, so that the hill climb will be obviated. The hospital grounds will be opened' for inspection on November 16, 25, and 30, as well as tomorrow, and a large attendance is anticipated. Mothers' Union Festival. Last week the members of the Mothers' Union from Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Ngaio, Johnsonville, and Khandallah joined in their annual festival gathering. A large number were present at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral in the morning, for the celebration of the Holy Communion. The service was conducted -by the Rev. A. F. CollardScruby, assisted by Canon Davies, Archdeacon Hansell, and the Rev. C. H. Isaacson. A choir of Mothers' Union members led the singing, and the Rev. F. M. Kempthornc was organist. At the beginning of the service, seven banners belonging to the branches, represented were carried up the central aisle in procession, and placed in the sanctuary. A retiring collection

was taken for the Mothers' Union Cathedral Baptistry Fund. The Rev. C. E. Willis preached a fine sermon on the affirmation of the creed: "I Believe in the Communion of Saints."

W.N.R. in Outer Suburbs.

The annual meeting of the Khan-dallah-Ngaio branch, of the Women's National Reserve was held at the residence of the president, Mrs. A. B. Gibbons, Khandallah, recently.' In'the absence of Mrs. F. Porter, president of the Residential Nursery, Mrs. Gibbons read the annual report. A very satisfactory balance-sheet was read by the secretary, Mrs. Phillipps. The election of officers for the coming year resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. A. B. Gibbons; vice-presidents, Mesdames R. B. Gibbons, W. H. Gledhill, J. G. Smith, A. Seed, A. Green; commitee). Mesdames H. Heays, Max Plimmer, .S. W.-Peterson, F. Porteous, A. McNiel, R. Cox, Noel Kinvig, McGillNut, G. Laurenson, F. Bailey, J. Lea, George Swan, and Huffon, and Mrs. W. Phillipps, hon. secretary. A feature of the afternoon was a talk 4by Miss Kathleen McCaul who spoke interestingly of her trip to Europe and her many experiences on the Continent. A presentation was made to Mrs. Gibbons by the committee and the gift of about 30 dozen eggs to the nursery from the members present will be greatly appreciated. The committee served afternoon tea.

DUFFILL—CHAPMAN

Iceland poppies in golden shades-de-corated the Cathedral Church of St. Paul yesterday evening for the wedding of Francis Byrne, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Chapman, Hokitika, and Walter Charles, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Duffi.ll, Paekakariki. The Rev. Canon D. J. Davies performed the ceremony and Mr. Spencer Cooper was at the organ. During the signing of the register Mr. Arnold Perry, Hokitika, sang. A classically-cut gown of stiffened cream net was worn by the bride, who was escorted by her father. The" full skirt was fluted and patterned in conventional floral design of fine silver braid. The necklace of pearls was the gift of the bridegroom. The long white tulle veil fell from a floral topknot which matched the creamy centred roses and lily of the valley in her shower bouquet. The bridesmaids, Misses Colina Brice, of Wellington, and Esme Coburn, of Marsden, Westland, wore unusual brilliant-studded frocks of Persian pink over lemon under-dresses. Their topknots were of forsythia and pink flowers, and they carried shower bouquets to tone. Mr. George McKenzie, Wellington, was best man and the groomsman was Mr. Vincent Chapman, Ross. Messrs. Norman Byrne, Wellington, and Twentyman, Eketahuna, were ushers. The reception was held at the Midland Hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Chapman receiving the guests with.Mr. and Mrs. Duffill. Mrs. Chapman wore a smart floral frock patterned in fellow on a prune ground, a matching prune velvet coatee, and a headdress to tone. She carried a bouquet in shades of deep cyclamen. Mrs. Dufflll's ensemble was navy blue and her bouquet was in pastel fuchsia tones. The reception room was gay with lemon and pink flowers. The bride left from the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Byrne.

When Mr. and Mrs. Duffill left later the bride was wearing a cinnamon brown ensemble with nigger-brown accessories and a posy to tone. They will make their future home in Eketahuna.

GUIDES' GARDEN PARTY

(From "The Post's" Representative.) NELSON, November 9.

The Nelson Provincial Guide Association was fortunate in having such a perfect day for its garden party, which was held on Saturday in the lovely grounds of "Melrose," the residence of the late Mrs. Percy Adams. Lady Scott, who has lately arrived from India, was met by Mrs. Lock, vice-president, and Miss Gray, Provincial Commissioner, and other Guide officials. Lady Scott, in declaring the fete open, stated that she herself had been every kind of Guide officialfrom guider, examiner, secretary to Provincial Commissioner of Assam, and so had intimate knowledge of all the different phases of Guiding. .There were many stalls and side-shows, and afternoon tea was given in the shade of the trees on the lawn. The Nelson Garrison Band played during the afternoon, and visitors were much amused when a well-trained team of Guides danced the popular "Boomps-a-Daisy." Country and folk dancing, pitching tents, and signalling and ambulance work were all very ably demonstrated, and efficiency seemed to be the keynote. It was a most successful afternoon and should be the means of reviving interest in this important youth movement. Morning Tea. The rooms of the Women's Club were very gay yesterday when Mrs. J. B. Lemmer and Mrs. K. Lucas invited .many friends to meet Lady Scott. Some of those present were Mrs. Richard Duncan, Miss K. Lucas, Mrs. C. Y. Fell, Mrs. C. R. Fell, Mrs. N. On Tuesday at the Nelson golf links the final match of the. season was: played for a trophy given, by Mrs. Davidson. After tea the trophies won during the year were presented by Mrs. E. B. pionship cup was won by Mrs. H. Topliss and Miss J. Betts was runnerup. At the end of the prize-giving, Mrs. Moore asked Miss L. Lucas to accept from the members of the club a small gift of appreciation for the wonderful service that Miss Lucas has given to the club for a great many years. Miss Lucas was also congratulated on being elected Aas New Zealand president of the Ladies' Golf Union for the ensuing year.

FINAL BRIDGE PARTY

'■■ Aquilegias and roses made a bravo show in the Free Ambulance Hall yesterday afternoon when members ot the ladies' auxiliary were entertained at the final bridge afternoon for theyear. The circle meets every other Thursday, and as a result of diligent work on the part of the committeeTa considerable sum has been .raised for the Free Ambulance Association. At yesterday's party this fact was mentioned by Sir Charles Norwood, who commended the committee for. its splendid work throughout the year.

Mrs. Walshe, the convener, and Mrs. W. H. Gledhill, Mrs. A. Bowater," Mrs. M. Searle, and Mrs. A. Young, who officiated at the afternoon tea intervals, were specially thanked for their generosity, and Mrs. Walshe and Mrs. Gledhill were presented with lovely bouquets. Musical honours were accorded the benefactors.

Prizes were presented by Sir Charles Norwood to^the following winners of trophies during the seasons—Mrs. Kessell (highest score), Mrs. Parsons and Miss Connell (runners-up)';■' Mrs. Parsdns (special prize); Mrs. Wilson (junior); Miss Uren (auction); Mrs. F. Roffe (contract); Mrs. Putton (stocking competition). Mrs. Scott won the tablecloth .competition. Prizes were donated by Mrs. A. B. Gibbons, Mrs. B. Mitchell, and Mrs. Gledhill.
