OBITUARY.

MR. F. H. MATHER

The death occurred on Sunday- of;. Mr. Francis• Henry Mather, who was} Mayor of Eastbourne from 1918 to< 1924. He. was 69 years old and had, been in poor health for some time. • Mr. Mather was born .in Tinonee,". New South Wales, and came to Nevrj, Zealand about.44 years ago. Mr.- Mather then." began business on. his own account ,as \ a warehouseman. He retired some;years ago. He had been a resident of Eastbourne since 1918. During Mr. Mather's term as Mayor - of Eastbourne • the -Borough Council.. acquired the ferry steamer Murltai, : the purchase of which was approved,. of by an almost unanimous vote of the ' ratepayers, and during his term, of .• office also the municipal tennis courts; were laid down. Mr. Mather was a member of Lodge. Waterloo in- Wellington and of Lodge ■' Eastbourne. He was president of the-. Eastbourne Cricket Club till the Time"-;, of his death, arid" was also for many,;-, years president of the Eastbourne ; Rugby Football Club. Mr. Mather leaves a widow, one son, -•■ Mr. N. H. Mather, of Eastbourne, "and 'I three daughters, Dr. Phyllis Wallace, " of Australia, Miss Jean Hunt Mather," of the staff of the Wellington Central-, Library, and Mrs. Frances' Hamilton, . of Eastbourne. The esteem in which Mr. Mather was ; held was shown by the large and re-,-presentative attendance at his funeral.? yesterday. .' j
