GIRL GUIDES'WORK

LADY GALWAY 'S ADDRESS

The annual general meetingofthe Wellington Province Girl Guides, held at the English-speaking Union.rooms Wellington, yesterday afternoon, was attended by her Excellency Viscountess Galway (Dominion president) and Miss Ruth Herrick (Chief iioner) Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop (provincial president) presided, and Mrs. E C Holmes (provincial commissioner) and Mrs. Martin Tweed (commissioner for publicity) were also at the official table. , Mrs. Holmes, in presenting the,.fifteenth annual report, said that there was a satisfactory increase in guiders, guides, and brownies,'but the province was very short of commissioners. Progress had been made in camping. The permanent camp site at Waikanae was of great value, and several improvements had been made there during the year.r " . J . ' The activities of the association during the year had been largely directed towards the work in connection with the Centennial Exhibition, and thanks were due to Mrs. Hislop -for her success in procuring space at the Exhibition for a guide Stand, which would be next to that of the Boy Scouts. " M .. A ■. ~ ; Lady 'Galway said she felt that" the v Girl Guide movement would be able to play its part in the work of stabilising the nations at this time of world unrest and war by cultivating a spirit of self-sacrifice, contentment, and true religious outlook: "The opportunity for service is always with us," said Lady Galway, "and guiding offers a splendid opportunity for service in training the young, which is so important." PREPARATION NEVER WASTED. Lady Galway expressed thanks to those who had helped the Girl Guide movement. In speaking of the.many women in New Zealand who were anxious to take part in war work, Lady Galway said that although at.present ■this work was not required, should the ■war continue for long, which she hoped would not be the case, women might be needed, so that preparation was necessary. She advised her listeners to be patient, to cultivate a true sense of proportion, and to continue with their usual occupation and services. Lady Galway also spoke of the Centennial Girl Guide camp to be held in January, and congratulated the executive on the annual report and balancesheet!

• Missßuth Herrick, Chief Commissioner, gave an interesting address. She said that in New Zealand the pro-i portion, of Guiders and leaders was smaller ■in proportion to the population than in England, j Guiding, she said, was a wo»k of vital importance; and the active 'training out of doors and general guiding activities were not in opposition to the schools and schooling, as was proved by leading educational authorities who approved the movement. She also expressed appreciation of the splendid work' that Mrs. Martin Tweed had done for the movement in the province. OFFICERS ELECTED.
