POOR RECORD OF MARES
Mares have a poor record in the Melbourne Cup, only four of them having yet won this race, but there are some sound stayers in the division this year, comprising Feminist, Ortelle's Star, Cooranga, and Rivette, and the last-named is the ruling favourite
for the event.
The history of the Melbourne Cup dates back to 1861, and the first mare to win was Briseis, who took the Derby-Cup double in 1876. The second success went to another three-year-old filly in Auraria, who had run third in Wallace's Derby. The third winner was the seven-year-old Acrasia in 1904. The fourth was the three-year-old Sister Olive in 1921, this, filly's only other success in her whole career being the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes as a two-year-old, though she raced till she was five. Since 1921 three mares have gainled minor places, Mufti (third), Sarcherle (twice second and once third), and Ortelle'S Star (third).
