NGAIO CLUB
The annual tourney for the championship of the Ngaio Chess Club has been won by Mr. James Morton, who has held the Wadestown Club's championship on several occasions. Messrs. E. E. Hicks and R. G. Wade tied for second place with Mr. H. N. Robie and Mr. D. Steele in close pursuit. Mr. Steele, who is only fifteen years of age, scored 2£ points out of 3 against the leaders. He is a player of exceptional promise. Mr. Morton holds for the ensuing year the handsome silver cup given by a former vice-president, Mr. W. Watts, and will retain a replica of this fine trophy. The club championship has been won six times by E. E. Hicks, five times by S. Faulknor, four times by J. Lindsay, three times by F. K. Kelling, twice by G. A. Jones, and once each by A B. Topp, F. J. Brooker, and W. J. Carman (whose win in 1917 caused his name to be the first placed on the club's ladder, which was made by A. S. Green, a former honorary secretary, out of timber from the wreck of the s.s. bPenguin). In the club's annual handicap tourney Messrs. E. E« Hicks (class D and R. G Wade (class*' ID tied for first place. The former, who conceded the odds of pawn and move, won the play-off. The following are the winners of this annual handicap event, in which two names have been bracketed on a few occasions:—Messrs. E. E. Hicks (tt times), F. J. Brooker (5 times). S. Faulknor (3 times), A. B. Topp (twice), D. Wild. H. V. Croxton (twice rifle champion of New Zealand), H. Stringer, J. A. Glasgow, A. J. Coleman, W. J. Carman, C. G. Glenday (who left in 1927 to make his home in Canada), H. L. James (who died on November 13, 1931), J. Lindsay, G. G. Lowe, R. A. Godtschalk, J. Morton, and D. Steele.
