MAORI'S ORDEAL
INJURED BY EXPLOSION
LOSS OF RIGHT HAND

WHAKATANE, November 2,
Found by two of his children with serious injuries- to his face and his right hand blown off by the explosion of detonators on his farm at Tarao, near Whakatane, John Wineti, a Maori, aged 39, was. admitted to the Whakatane Hospital shortly after noon today, and his condition in the evening was reported to be critical. :
Mr. Wineti was drying a fuse by a fire, near which were lying detonators and gelignite. The gelignite ignited with the heat, causing the detonators to explode. After the accident, Mr. Wineti was still conscious, and crawled about a quarter of a mile to a ditch, soaking his 'arm in the water. He was found there by. two of his sons, afterwards being taken to the Whakatane Hospital.
