BETTER WEATHER

NOW MAINLY FINE

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate and rather variable winds, with southerlies predomin- ' ating. Weather mainly fine, but a shower or two possible tonight.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for some local north-westerly winds, but westerly to. south-westerly winds will predominate. Winds will be strong at times in exposed positions, but otherwise will be light to fresh in force. The weather for the most part will be fair, but it will be rather changeable, however, with some scattered showers in most districts. Temperatures, will continue cool. A series of depressions connected with the centre of low pressure to the south-east has been crossing the Dominion. The weather yesterday was changeable, With scattered rain in the South Island, while in the North Island it was mainly fine but cloudy. The rain was heaviest,on the West Coast, Arthur's Pass, Greymouth, and Westport each having over half an inch. Westerly winds prevailed and were fresh to strong from Taranaki southwards, but elsewhere they were light to moderate in force. The weather this morning was fine for the most part, but a few isolated showers were falling. Temperatures have been rather cool, and there were, frosts last night in Canterbury and Otago.

Auckland had intermittent sunshine yesterday with increasing cloud. A fresh westerly wind decreased in force last night and became more southerly in direction. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 68 and 54.3 degrees respectively. Early this morning there was some light rain totalling six points, but tlie weather later became fine.

A strong and gusty north-westerly wind and grey skies made conditions in Wellington unpleasant. During the night the wind chahged to the south, but winds this morning were light and variable and the weather had improved. Yesterday's temperatures were moderate, 58.3 degrees being the maximum and 45.6 degrees the minimum. '■ -'

Christchurch had a warm day, the maximum temperature rising to 69.3 degrees. Skies were variable, with a fresh north-westerly wind in the morning and a south-westerly in the afternoon. The sky cleared last night," the minimum temperature falling to 39.6 degrees with ■a, frost' of five degrees. It was fine this morning with a light wind from the north-east.

It rained in Dunedin yesterday morning, but the weather cleared in the afternoon when a strong south-west-erly wind began to moderate.
