SEA CAPTAIN RETIRES
The retirement is announced by the Orient Line of Captain F. R. O'Sullevan, who has held commands in the company's steamers since. April, 1919.
Captain O'Sullevan gained his early nautical training on H.M.S. Conway and subsequently in tramp steamers. He joined the Orient Line as fourth officer in the Ormuz in 1908. During the war he served in the company's steamer Otranto, which was commissioned by the Admiralty as an armed merchant cruiser..' The Otranto survived the defeat of Coronel and toolpart in the destruction of Yon Spec's squadron at the Falklands. The Otranto was also engaged in the hunt for the Dresden, last survivor of the German Pacific fleet, aiid was at hand when the Dresden was found at Juan Fernandez by H;M.S. Glasgow,
After the war Captain .O'Sullevan made a trip in the Friedrichsruhe, bringing troops back to Australia. Since then he has become well known to New Zealanders travelling by the Suez Canal i-oute, his commands on that, run being the Ormuz, Orvieto, Otranto, Orontes, and Orcades. His last trip was iri the Orcades, early in 1939.
