MANY ENTRIES
CENTENNIAL LITERARY
COMPETITIONS
The literary' competitions, promoted by the Government in relation to the Centennial have drawn a large number of entries, stated the Minister of Internal Affairs (the, Hon. W. E. Parry) today. The competitions were first advertised in' .August. of last, year, and from that time up to the closing date (October 20) a steadily-increasing stream of manuscripts had been received by the National Historical Committee, responsible for the conduct of the competition.
"Entries from New Zealanders resident overseas have been received from England, America, and Australia," the Minister said, "and, which is pleasing, every part of New Zealand seems to have forwarded its quota."
"An analysis'of the entries is as follows:—Novel 105, full-length play 46, essay 56,-' short story I^B, long poem 93. short poem. (less than 100 lines) 291; total, 789.
The- entries, following •on the closing dcite, were' dispatched to the judges Of each section,'^nd every entry would receive-; full' consideration, added Mr. Parry. Actually a number Of. finalist entries in" each" class Would- be read by all-members of the Literary. Committee, whose, joint opinions would be expressed before 'the winning entries were selected.' •
