INSPIRED BY MR. SHAW?
: Whence came -the Nazi' inspiration to blame the sinking of the Athenia on Mr.1 Winston Churchill? Possibly from no less a person than Mr. George Bernard Shaw. Dealing, with the "case against Germany" in his book, "What I Really Wrote About the War," Mr. Shaw recalls an article which he wrote in the "New.Age" on May 25, 1916, entitled "The German Case Against Germany," in-the course of which he mentioned the Prussian system whereby the blunder of a Prussian officer was generally converted into a historic.-, achievement to save the face of Prussian Junkerism.
"Take the case of the idiot who sank the Lusitania," wrote Mr. Shaw. "His exploit would have paid the Allies very handsomely if they had bribed him with'a million to do what he did gratuitously, out of sheer folly. Indeed, had;the Germans disclaimed the deed and maintained that the torpedo was a;British-one,.launched by Mr. Churchill's order ;f or the sake,of prejudicing the; cause =.of < Germany with the United States, it; would have been hard tfavsdiscredi&savplaiisible a story. . » .".
