First off the mark with a century in Wellington senior cricket this season was V. H. dv Chateau, and pleasing it is to see this player starting off so ■■ well. There was more in it than the actual century. He set off again in the second innings: and had made 50 not out when the match ended. Some years ago dv Chatetau was' tried as a Plunket Shield player, and in a bad match for Wellington he did exceptionally well. However, he was not given much chance afterwards, but when he. went to Auckland prior to the selection of the last New Zealand [ team to go to he performed : very creditably for Wellington, his fielding, in fact, being right up with the best in a great Auckland-Welling-ton match. R. Gwilliam (Hutt),was sent in first against Wellington with a view of trying: him out as an opening batsman. The experiment succeeded, as the colt gave the best display of the day for Hutt in getting 31 with brisk strokes on the drive. . '> Some good catches were taken in the

1 Hutt-Wellington match, those on the first day by Airey, Ell, and Gwilliam being particularly noticeable. J. Coupland had a good match for Karori, batting twice without losing his wicket and making a total of 61 runs.- He is not available for the present, match, as he will be on his honeymoon. It seems that M. Bilby is going to be amongst the runs again this season. He made an excellent beginning with 80 for Institute against Karori, and it was a good score at the right time. Hepburn and Tindill have set Midland off on the right foot, this experienced pair forming two excellent opening partnerships for last year's champions. Both, tested University to the full in the first innings, and they made 135 before being parted. A half-cen-tury came from their first-wicket partnership in the second innings. Hep-1 burn was unlucky in not making a century himself, as he had only a few runs to get when he played on. Boyes promises to be a conspicuous performer again with the ball for Wellington College Old Boys. He reaped ja harvest in Kilbirnie's second innings.
