(From "The Post's" Representative.)

"The day returns and brings us the petty round of irritating concerns and duties—help us to perform them with laughter and a kind face—let cheerfulness abound with industry." Taking this morning prayer of R. L. Stevenson as the keynote of her address at the opening of the Methodist Ladies' Guild's annual sale of work yesterday, Mrs. J. W. Andrews, Mayoress of Lower Hutt, urged women to take it as their daily watchword and make its prevailing tone of cheerfulness and high courage their .own. So would home life be found as refreshing oases in the turmoil of life and troubled times, and a great contribution to peace be made by women the world over. "Cheerfulness must abound in the preparations of this >f air,",continued Mrs. Andrews, "because' "such a happy atmosphere pervades the sale each year." She voiced the regret of all present at the forthcoming departure of the Rev. H. T. Peat and Mrs. Peat, and .wished them every happiness in. their new sphere of service in Dunedin.. On behalf of the members the Rev; - Mr. Peat thanked Mrs. Andrews, who was presented with a bouquet, and. tendered his own thanks, for her personal good wishes. On the low carpeted dais a lovely floral display of pink rhododendrons, azaleas, ■ arid . lilies showed effectively against dark hangings. The: stalls, well stocked and arranged, were gaily decked with streamers in red, white, and blue, and business was brisk both in the afternoon and in the evening when games and competition!! were added to the entertainment. The tearooms were gay with rich-hued flame and apricot azaleas. Mrs. W. Hall (acting president) entertained at tea the official guests, who included Mrs. J. W. Andrews, the Rev. H. T. Peat and Mrs. Peat, Mrs. W. J. Eddy, Mrs. H. B. Shaarer, and the Rev. J. Sylvester. The stalls were staffed as follows:— Plain sewing: Mesdames J. Stonehouse (convener), W. J. Shand, T. Paton, C. The freshness of home and garden produce, cut flowers and new season's plants and seedlings was an outstanding feature of the attractive "bring and buy" sale organised yesterday afternoon by the Mothers' Club of the Lower Hutt Plunket Society and held in the Plunket Rooms at Riddiford Park. The well-stocked stalls and busy tearooms were in the charge of the Mothers' Club committee, the wares and afternoon tea being supplied by the Plunket mothers and friends of the society. Members of the nurses' staff also contributed towards the success of the afternoon, and the enthusiasm of all concerned resulted in a very satisfactory sum being realised for general district fuds. . EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS

CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION BALL

The Centennial Exhibition Ball, which took place in the Assembly Hall at the Exhibition last night, exceeded all expectations. "Stupendous and colossal," the favourite adjectives of the showman, seem the only ones which adequately describe, the event. Over a thousand people were there, and yet the hall was far from overcrowded, and the dancers were dwarfed by the immensity of its proportions. The gowns worn by the women merited the title of ball-dresses, and decorations glittered' on the left breast of many an evening jacket. Altogether, it was a well-organised and brilliant occasion, the culmination of a hundred years of social life in New Zealand and the preliminary to the celebrations which will mark the Dominion's coming-of-age.

An impressive introduction to the beauty of the hall was the scene of the flood-lit buildings and grounds which greeted the guests upon arrival. Perhaps the most' impressive feature inside the hall was also the lighting, which flattered the graceful lines of the architecture and enhanced the charm of the dresses worn by the dancers. Cinerarias and pelagoniums set amid ferns were grouped in the big glassedin recesses in the walls of the foyer, making lovely.flower pictures which toned with the handsome murals depicting the history of New Zealand. , - Splashes of colour were made in the hall itself by .the red and black cabaret tables grouped at one end in front of the dress circle and along the sides. Soft green and red lights shone up under the leaves of the foliage and flowers banked in front of the stage, so that the subtle tonings of the leafy crotan imported from Australia and the Islands were shown to full advantage. Red and pink pelagoniums made a brave show of colour, arid tiny potted begonias, with fragile nemesias, added an exotic touch to the floral "bank." The crowning feature was a gracefully arranged trail of rich claretcoloured bougainvillaea ("Mrs. Butts"), a very rare species not often seen in this country. The shadows of stately palms were thrown, through the clever use of lighting, on the back of the stage, and there, also, silhouetted in the frenzied pantomime of shadow play, were the gesticulations of the orchestra's conductor, Mr. Manuel Raymond.
