TRACK IN SPLENDID ORDER

(By "Rangatira.")

Fine weather, tempered by a fresh breeze, favoured the Wellington Trotting Club's October Meeting at Hutt Park this afternoon. The track was slightly dead after the rain of the previous few days, but was otherwise in capital order., There was a large attendance. , Results at time of going to press were:— PETONE HANDICAP, £200; second horse £40 and third £20 from the stake; li.miles. 3—3—Mr. G. Header, who had previously won on the course, trotted up to his name in the Petone Handicap, as he was never headed in the running. After a round Listowel, Sphinx, Escalado, and Biworthy were the only ones who were going steadily enough to have any chance against him, but once on the home stretch he moved easily away to- score very decisively. Escalado, who had been a bit slow off the mark, held Biworthy out of second. Listowel was falling back with three furlongs to go, and was cut out of fourth by Sphinx. The others broke repeatedly. SHORT HANDICAP, £175; second" horse £30 and third £20 from the stake; li miles. 2—-2—Mr. H. Stafford's blk m Swift Lady, by Grattan Loyal—Swift Pointer, 4yrs, scr (Owner) .... i > s—s—Mr. J. A. Swift Lady, one of the most promising improvers in the field/opened her winning account by leading all the way in the Short Handicap. She was attended early by Brungasta, First Shake, and Clockwork, and after turning for home two lengths in front of Clockwork,-Reymere (who 1 hadi moved upaftef half a mile), Brungastai arid . First Shake, she hung on under hot : challenges from First Shake and Clockwork to win by half a length from First Shake, who would have been ' much harder to stall off if she had not ' run out wide entering the straight. Brungasta was a good fourth. The favourite, Starace, was never pacing right after early mistakes. BOROUGH HANDICAP, £225; second horse £45 and third £20 from the stake; 11 miles. , . 2—2—Mr. W. E. Sticking's b h Ac-' countant, by Jack Potts—Auditress, syrs, scr (C. S. Donald) .. 1 s—4_Mr. E. F. C Hind's b g Three Tens, by Jack,Potts—Lady Effie, 3yrs, scr (J. B. Pringle) 2 10—10 —Mr. F. Length; half a length. Times: 3min 18 4-ssec, 3min 19sec, 3min 19 l-ssec. (Winner trained by C. S. Donald, Christchurch.) Accountant proved too solid for his opposition over the last half-mile of the Borough Handicap. Beginning quite well, he settled down behind Queen's County, Club King, Diversion, and Sentiment, and, kept a bit out on the track, he remained in that position for a mile, when he moved up smartly in behind the leading pair, whom he readily cut down in the straight.. Three Tens, who went up on the inner of Accountant after half a mile, threw out a likely challenge in the last furlong, but he began to mix it near the post and had to be content with second. Queen's County was an easy third, with Diversion, Club bKing, and Sentiment following at intervals. Club King stopped badly iri the straight. Siege Gun was left at the start.
