SHELLY WINS AT HUTT

J. Shelly, of the Miramar Club, won his flrst golf title in open company yesterday, when he defeated J. E. Nicolaus, of the Shandon Club, in tbe flnal of the Hutt Club's annual tournament for tho Winter Cup. It was a closely-fought final, played in perfect conditions; and the Hutt course, as it had been throughout the tournament, was In most remarkable condition. Some nifty putting by Shelly after he had warmed to his work really gave him the title. Nicolaus started well and with 4's at the third and fourth he was 2 up. At the fifth, he had an advantage, but Shelly sank a three-yard putt, for a half; and at the sixth, after both men had played fine Iron seconds to the green. Shelly sank a seven- or eight-yard putt for a birdie 3. They squared the game at the seventh, when Nicolaus's second drifted, aud at the ninth Shelly went ahead with a good 4 after laying a long approach putt from the back of the green dead on the hole. Shelly was out ln 33 and Nicolaus in 39. Nicolaus had to sink a desperation putt for a half in 4 on the tenth, but he was all at sea on the eleventh, his chip from the top; of the bank running through the green. Shelly, on the other hand, played a masterly chip to within a foot or so and easily secured his S. Nicolaus, a notably plucky fighter, was not sufficiently accurate on the next two holes to hold Shelly, but ho came into his own at the fourteenth, mostly because of Shelly's generosity. Nicolaus had played 4 close to the pin and Shelly 3 for a short distance behind— a-stymie, In fact. Shelly tried to sink his putt and knocked Nicolaus's ball into the hole. They halved the fifteenth and sixteenth in 5 and 4 respectively, and tho end camo at the seventeenth. Shelly played a magnificent Iron second Into the wind. The ball stopped rolling about five yards from the cup. Nicolaus was again astray In a bunker, and though he made a good recovery, he could not sink the putt. Shelly won the hole In 4 to 5 and the match by 2 and 1. . ■ The results of the special flight matches were:-— Semi-flnals: E. S. Thomson beat D. J. Oliver, 5 and 4; R. Mudgway beat G. Tustin, 5 and 4. Final: Thomson beat Mudgway. 2 up. The fourball bogey was won by J. Osborne and N. Payne on a count-back from H. J. Porter and K. B. Lockett. The score was 7 up.
