GOLD RUSH IN CHINA

NEW ZEALANDER'S STORY

BOOM TOWNS SPRINGING UP

(Received September 23, 2.5 p.m.). NEW YORK, September 22. The Chungking correspondent of the "New York Times" says that on returning from north-west . Szechwan, in the vicinity of Sunpanting, Mr. Rewi Alley, of New Zealand, technical adviser to the Chino-Industrial Cooperative Company, described scenes similar to the Klondike gold rush. He said the quantity of gold in the hills and streams was enormous. Mr. Alley has been organising and pacifying the fierce tribesmen whose hostility has hitherto prevented exploitation of the area. Thousands are now flocking to the district and boom towns'are springing up overnight.
